Miki at Norden Farm
Miki is this year’s family Christmas show at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, in Maidenhead. I was kindly gifted tickets for myself, my husband and our eight year old daughter Eva.
It isn’t the first time we have been to one of the festive shows at Norden Farm, but this was the first time seeing Miki and we were unfamiliar with the story.
When we arrived, we headed down to the main Courtyard Theatre and got comfortable in our seats. It was a Saturday morning, and we were at the relaxed showing which is adapted for those with smaller babies and toddlers or children with SEND. This means they are free to move around – and there is also a special Miki themed chill out sensory space where they can go if it gets too much.
Stage Show with Music and Puppetry
The stage was set with an enchanting winter scene, and we were introduced to Miki and her friend Penguin as the story began. We were taken on a journey of their friendship and how a little tree brightens up their home. As their other friend Polar Bear joins them, they struggle to keep the twinkly lights shining. Miki then goes on an unexpected underwater adventure when in search for a star.
The story, which is based on the book by Stephen Mackey and presented by theatre company Slot Machine, keeps you on the edge of your seat and entertained throughout. Miki’s friends are worried about her, as she disappears under the water. But lots of magical and rather entertaining things happen when she is there – including a rather jazzy dancing crab!
In fact, it is very cleverly performed. There are transformations, and the audience are consistently and smoothly taken to an underwater world, and back to onto land again as the story unfolds.
A Story of Friendship and Everlasting Light
This lovely story told on stage, has funny and delightful characters, beautiful music and has a poignant ending. The show is 50 minutes long, and Miki is at Norden Farm until 30th December 2023.
Tickets are £15.50 each, £13.50 under 16’s and babies/toddlers under 18 months on laps go free. Friends and family (4 people) £54. Perfect for children aged 3 and over.
