The Little Green Boat Company at Ray Mill Island – review
The Little Green Boat Company is a local self drive boat hire company. They have established themselves on the river in Staines and Marlow and have now set up at their brand new base, on Ray Mill Island in Maidenhead. They opened on the Island by Boulters Lock on the 5th August 2023, and kindly invited me to go along and enjoy a river adventure!
I took my 20 year old son and 8 year old daughter along with me and it was a gorgeous day. As we walked over the bridge at Boulters Lock to Ray Mill Island, there were clear signs for the boat hire. We found them based close to the Taplow bridge.
When we arrived, I could see four small six seater boats and there were also some rowing boats that could also be hired. We were warmly welcomed and given a safety briefing and an explanation of how to drive our boat.
Maidenhead River Boat Trip
We hired the bost for one hour, and were advised on how far to go down the stretch of the river until turning around to come back. We headed down towards Bray, going under the Taplow bridge, the Maidenhead bridge and the Maidenhead Sounding Arch.
Although I am familiar with this stretch of the Thames and have also paddleboarded a short part of it, it was a really peaceful and relaxing way to see the sights. Other boat passengers wave as you go past, and there’s so much wildlife to see on the river and on the banks. We were even lucky enough to see a kingfisher fly into the reeds.
And being a sunny summer’s afternoon – that made the experience even better.
The motor boats were also really easy to drive (although my son Kyle did the driving!) and a lovely day out during the summer holidays.
Book Your River Adventure
The Little Green Boat Company at Ray Mill Island boat hire can be for one hour or four hours (half a day). The cost for one hour is £48 and for half a day it is £220. Great for a family day out or for a group of friends.
You must be over 21 to hire the motor boats and over 18 to hire the rowing boats. A security deposit will be taken on the day. Pre-booking is recommended, as there is a risk they can sell out. Life jackets are available.
There are also activities at Ray Mill Island to do while you are there, such as visit the birds and guinea pigs or go to the cafe or the Boathouse at Boulters Lock restaurant. Then further down towards the bridge is a playpark, cafe and crazy golf. So you could definitely make a full day of it.
