Joni Vino Wine Tasting Events

Jonathan Goodwin, AKA Joni Vino has a big passion for wine, and is incredibly knowledgable – providing expert commentary, from where the wine comes from, to the best way to enjoy it. Joni’s professional wine journey began in 2000 and he now works closely with businesses as a wine consultant. With his mastery, expertise and natural hosting skills, Joni has also branched out to offer fun yet educational wine tasting events for those with a keen interest, or fancy an experience with a difference!

Recently, Joni hosted a wine tasting evening at the tapas restaurant El Cerdo, Maidenhead and invited me down to his ‘Introduction to Spanish Wine’ event.

I took a friend along and on arrival, we were warmly greeted by the host himself. We had an area of the restaurant to ourselves along with three other couples forming the group, which made it feel comfortable – and also enabled us to all engage with one another.

Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savour

Joni insisted the evening would be 10 percent educational, and 90 percent fun, and it definitely was. In front of each of us were six empty wine glasses (and lots of delicious canapes on the table), and we were taken through the process of how the evening would run in a very relaxed, yet informative style.

One of the first things we were told when it came to tasting the wine was to swirl the wine around the glass. This not only gives you an idea of its viscosity, but it also releases the aromas as the air gets to it. Next we were asked to smell the wine. Each one had different aromas – depending on the grape, climate and age of the wine.

Then the fun part of tasting it. However, it was important to sip the wine to taste all the different flavours. And the final stage was to savour those flavours!

We each tried a sparkling wine, two different white wines, a rose and two different reds.

The whole experience lasted an hour, and Joni had devised a multiple choice quiz that we could take part in at the end – with a prize for the winners!

It covered everything he talked about as we were trying the wines – but it definitely wasn’t taken too seriously. The whole evening was a great way to learn about wine and appreciate it more – while Joni did a great job of making it social and enjoyable.
